Our next meeting will be November 13th, 11:45 at the Odessa Country Club. November’s speaker – Former Israeli Defense Forces General Yossi Lipman (now CEO of Alon Brands Retail, Southwest Convenience Stores) – approved for 1 hr. CLE. We will be honoring Judge Bill McCoy, and will have a retirement party that evening at the home of Cal and Amy Hendrick.

October Meeting

On October 9, 2014, the Ector County Bar Association will be honoring three distinguished attorneys for their contributions to the Bar and the community – Ray Stoker, Jr.; Jimmie B. Todd; and Joel V. Roberts.  We will also bid farewell to our District Clerk, Janis Morgan, as she enters retirement.  The meeting will be held at the Odessa Country Club, and begin promptly at 11:45.

Our Community Service focus will be Meals-on-Wheels, and Margaret Burton will be on hand to present an overview of that organization.  Remember to bring one or more “warm” items – new and gently-used coats for adults and children; new blankets, gloves, and socks.

Local CLE

DVD CLE is being offered at the Midland County Courthouse.  Advanced Criminal Law will be held September 8-10, and will be 37.50 CLE hours (6.25 ethics).  Cost is $298.00.  To register, call Nancy Berdoza at 688-4520.

September Meeting

The next meeting of the Bar Association is Thursday, September 11th at the Odessa Country Club. You will want to have your plate of food and be seated at 11:30 because we have a great meeting planned.  
Judge Tracey Scown will be speaking on “Recent Developments in Children’s Protection Court” (.75 CLE in family law), and share information regarding foster parenting and adoption.
Sara Kate Billingsley-Allen will present information regarding the “Food-2-Kids” Program.
We will also be discussing other issues, including E-Filing, and will be announcing the names of the attorneys we will be honoring during our October meeting.

E-Filing at the Ector County Courthouse 8/14/2014

There are plans to sponsor more tutorials about E-Filing and be sure to ask the District and County Clerks about the classes they will be holding to teach the legal community about e-filing.

Thursday, August 14 – E-Filing at the Ector County Courthouse

On August 14, the District Clerk and the County Clerk will be giving a presentation on the impending e-filing system at the Ector County Courthouse. Permissive e-filing is expected to go live in the second half of this year. The Odessa  Country Club has confirmed that they have bigger rooms available so our staff can attend.

PLEASE EMAIL  US AT ECTORCOUNTYBARASSOCIATION@GMAIL.COM BY 5PM ON TUESDAY AUGUST 5TH IF YOU AND YOUR STAFF PLAN TO ATTEND AND THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT PLAN TO ATTEND. Since a larger than average crowd is expected we must try to provide an accurate head count to the Odessa Country Club.

Lunch will be served at 11:30am with programming to begin at 11:45am.

Lunch for dues paying members and their staff is $20 per person. Lunch for non-dues paying lawyers, their staff, and guests will be $30 per person.

Friday, May 30th – Remembrance of Honorable Mark D. Owens

On May 30th at 9:30a.m., the Ector County Bar Association along with the Judges of Ector County will be taking the time to remember and honor the Honorable Mark D. Owens. Judge Smith has graciously agreed to open the 161st Courtroom to hold the remembrance and honoring.
